This year's recital will be held
on Saturday, June 11, 2011. More information about this year's recital will be provided soon, but please read the FAQ's
below to get a better understanding of our annual dance recital.
When, where & what is the purpose of the dress rehearsal?
The 2011
dress rehearsals will be Wednesday, June 8, 2011 and Thursday, June 9, 2011. The exact line-up for the dress rehearsal
will be announced at a later date, but keep both these dates open. The dress rehearsal is where all students will
run through their dances in full costumes and make-up to get a feel for the stage, and also when the sound and light technicians
will set sound and light cues for each dance.
Why must we purchase tickets to the
recital?
Producing
a live production takes many hours of preparation and has many costs involved. There are costs to rent the
facility (the theatre and EVERY dressing room individually) on both dress rehearsal and recital day, pay the required custodial
staff, lighting technicians, sound technicians, stage crew and security guards present on both dress rehearsal and recital
days, as well as costs for scenery & props, music liscensing and much more. The cost of your ticket is to cover
these charges, so that we don't have to pass these charges on in the form of tuition. Our ticket costs are comparable,
if not cheaper, than most dance studio's recital tickets in our area.
What time should
we arrive to the recital?
Students should be dropped off to the backstage area a
half hour before the show start time. DO NOT BE LATE. We will not wait for your child to begin the show. The doors will open
to the audience a half hour prior to the show start time. Do not arrive earlier or you will be waiting outside the front doors
in the hot sun.
How long will the show last?
We expect the show to be about 2 1/2 hours
with an intermission. All students must remain backstage for the entire show and must participate in the finale.
Why
are we not allowed to video tape or take any pictures?
Holding up a video camera
or camera from your seat is a distraction to the others around you and may cause blocked views. It is also considered poor
theater etiquette. Also, the flash from a camera and lights from a video camera are a BIG distraction to the performers onstage.
A flash can disorient a dancer and cause them to lose their balance. If you are caught taking pictures or video taping, you
will be asked to leave the theater immediately. Professionally taped and edited DVDs are available for purchase. You may,
however, take photos and video tape (from designated areas) at the dress rehearsal.
Why are parents not allowed backstage during the recital?
If every parent were to come backstage throughout the show, it would be chaotic. Volunteers
will remain backstage to watch all the students during the show. After your child has been checked in backstage, please go
to the audience and enjoy the show. At the end of the show one parent only (whom we most recognize) should come backstage
to pick up your child - this includes teenagers. Having extra bodies backstage will make it too crowded.
Why is underwear not allowed to be worn underneath tights/costume?
Wearing
underwear during a dance performance is unbecoming and unprofessional. You’d be surprised how much they show through
the costumes and tights on stage. Younger students who are not 110% potty trained should wear a diaper or pull-up, however
all other students should not wear underwear underneath their tights.
Why must my child wear make-up?
The stage lights are very bright and can make anyone look washed out. Applying the appropriate amount of stage
make-up is necessary so that you can see your child’s features. Creative Movement, Pre-Dance, Kinder-Combo and Kids
Groove students should wear pinkish-red glossy lips, some pink blush, a small amount of brown eye shadow and a little mascara.
All other students should wear full stage make-up. This includes foundation and powder, brownish-red glossy lips, pink blush,
light brown eye shadow with dark brown in the creases, eye liner and mascara. This amount of make-up should also be worn for
the dress rehearsal. Make-up for recital pictures can be a little toned down since there won’t be as many bright lights
to wash them out.
Why must my daughter wear her hair in a bun with out any bangs?
We are trying to teach the students about professionalism in the dance world and this would include
wearing their hair and make-up the way they would on stage in a professional show. Because your child is dancing onstage in
a group, we want everyone to look like a group. All students should pull their hair back into a smooth pony tail. Slick back
any whispies AND BANGS with gel and hairspray. Take the pony tail and twist it and then wrap it the twisted hair around the
holder to make a bun. Place multiple bobby pins in to hold secure and then place a hair net over to hold any shorter hair
down. Finally spray, spray, spray with hairspray to make sure everything is in place. If you have any questions regarding
how to make a bun, please see Ms. Kelly.
